Pinus thunbegii ‘Kotobuki’

Many of us think of pine trees and images of large, wide Christmas-shaped trees come to mind. Well, say hello to ‘Kotobuki’ a black Japanese pine that provides a shape and color that will change your view of pines forever.

‘Kotobuki’ looks like a tower of dark forest green in the garden with its narrow form. As the season moves along, the tree starts to develop sand-colored buds that hold next year’s needles of green. Each set of limbs creates a new tier of rich green which contrast with the charcoal black of the bark as the plant matures.

The striking narrow form and slower growth rate of ‘Kotobuki’ allows it to be a versatile garden plant. Its compact form can find a spot in even small gardens and will be a focal point of color 365 days a year.
